I've had my 914 longer than any vehicle in the collection. I purchased this in 2000 from a gentleman in Santa Clarita California off of eBay. A friend of mine and I drove out to pick up the car and drove it back to Texas. I remember my father telling me when I was much younger how rough riding these were. He was not wrong. With seats consisting of wood, one inch of foam, and leatherette you are definitely not floating on a cloud.
I've put approximately 20,000 miles on the car. It's a blast to drive. 3rd gear running hard merging on the highway with that engine pounding away behind you sounds amazing.
Not a good high speed car. Around 90ish the steering gets *very* light and the car feels about ready to go airborne. Lower speeds on twistys though? Lets go.
As much as I enjoyed driving the car it ended up put away in storage for approximately 9 years before I moved to Washington.
Fortunately there is a vibrant 914 community in the Pacific North West. I've seen more 914's in the few years I have lived here than in the entire time I've owned the car. While it starts runs and drives it needs sorting before going back on the road. With a variety of great places available for service I hope to be behind the wheel soon.
